Why can't I pay by credit/debit card?

There are several reasons why you may receive an error when attempting to pay by credit/debit card:

  • If it's a residential account:
    • Payment amounts over $1,000 on a credit/debit card are prohibited.
    • Any history of fraudulent card payments will prevent future card payments.
  • If it's a non-residential account:
    • Payment amounts over $1,000 on a credit/debit card are prohibited.
    • Credit/debit card payments are limited to residential and small use accounts.  Berkeley Electric Cooperative covers all card transaction fees associated with card payments, so we control our costs by limiting card payments by account type. Card payments are the only payment method blocked to certain account types - you can still make a payment using an electronic check, bank draft, paper check, cash, or money order.
